横須賀重砲兵連隊は、明治23年(1890)に要塞（ようさい）砲兵第一連隊として設置されました。 現在残る門は連隊の正門で、明治40年(1907)10月26日に竣工しました。これに連なって残る約16mの塀は、明治24年(1891)に出来上がったものと推定されます。門柱は58cm角で、高さは3.24m、塀の高さは1.8m。 横須賀に残る数少ない明治建造物で、現在は桜小学校、坂本中学校の門として使用されています。
