明治後半期から、海軍は、水道施設の整備強化を図るため、相模川水系の支流（中津川）を水源とした、約53㎞を自然流下によって横須賀市逸見浄水場まで引水する近代的な水道施設整備工事を行いました。軍港に使用するためのこの水道施設は、戦後、横須賀市に移管され、市民のために供給され続けましたが、2007（平成19）年に取水を休止し、2014（平成24）年に廃止されました。土木・建築工学の海軍技師が設計に携わり、濾過調整室や浄水池入口の建築意匠は、ゼツェッシォン・スタイル（分離派）の造形で、れんが造の緩速濾過池とともに、大正期から時が止まったようなモダンな風景です。
