走水は、横須賀市水道の始まりの水源地です。馬堀中学校から走水に抜ける２つのトンネルは、ヴェルニーが計画した軍港水道で、明治9年(1876）に市内で初めて水道管を施設したトンネルです。 当初は、低く狭いトンネルでしたが、軍用道路として拡張されました。
